What strategy tips will help me solve Hanjie puzzles?
As a way to start a puzzle, look at rows and columns that have a '0' - you can mark all these cells as empty straight off and this is important.
Also then look at the rows and columns with the largest numbers in them, these often have some cells that are certainly placed.
Imagine it is a 10 x 10 puzzle and one row has a '6' next to it. Now you know that if the total is more than half the length then there are cells in the middle that can be placed with certainly.
Put another way, no matter which 6 cells are filled in continuously in the region, some cells are filled in all, and these can be marked straight off. You can see this by seeing what happens if the six cells are from the left most cell of the region in and then from the right most cell of the region in - you will see the overlap, and can be filled in accordingly.
Also remember to cross reference constantly - each time you place, look at the corresponding rows and columns that may be affected by that.
And equally important is to mark cells that cannot be filled, as this can help you deduce where filled cells must go.
It takes a bit of getting used to, but once the rules are understood and you get going with your techniques and cross referencing, many people really enjoy solving hanjie puzzles!
